On June 3, 2015, students from Barrie Central Collegiate’s (BCC) law class were immersed in more than exam preparation. As part of a school field trip, they had the opportunity to experience our legislature at work and participate in an historic moment in Canadian history.
The trip began with a tour of Queen’s Park and an opportunity to observe a portion of Question Period. What made it truly unique, however, was the issue in focus at the Legislature that day. On June 2, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report was released to the public, so BCC students were present as a representative from each party responded to the report and called for information about the residential school system to become a mandatory part of the Ontario curriculum.
The students also had the opportunity to meet our local Member of Provincial Parliament, Ann Hoggarth, and Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown.
