Students discuss equity, inclusion and wellness at annual symposium

By Danielle Strohm – Communications Intern

Students were able to ask questions, generate discussion and share their ideas at the Simcoe County District School Board’s annual Equity in Action (EIA) symposium on Feb. 23.

Students from across the county gathered for a day of learning about equity and inclusion issues. The event included hands-on workshops about topics such as mental health, LGBTQ issues and expressing yourself through guerilla art.

Participants were encouraged to use the hashtag #equityinaction2015 to document their day.

Their excitement about the symposium was evident online.

The day began with some Yoga from Ann Green to help open our minds for awesomeness.

Next up was our morning keynote Ian Tyson from unlearn.

Students got to participate in a variety of workshops including Media & Me, Equity Through History, From Bystander to Ally, Out in Schools, Mental Wealth and Guerilla Art.

The day was capped off with afternoon keynote Chris D’Souza.

It was a fun day had by all. Students are encouraged to bring what they learned from today back into their schools and communities. We cannot wait to see the positive change they will make!
