Students in Orillia had a chance to speak with employers in the skilled trades this week at the Explore the Trades event hosted by the Orillia Manufacturers’ Association (OMA) and Orillia District Construction Association.
This event, held at OD/Park Secondary School, gave local secondary school students the chance to meet with representatives from the manufacturing, construction and automotive sectors to learn about career options and to get a hands-on look at what goes on in these trades. In the evening, the event was opened up for Grade 8 students, parents and the public.
“When I was in high school at Twin Lakes I heard about an apprenticeship opportunity in Grade 10. I seized the occasion, have had a great 13 year career in CNC machining and am now my own boss,” said Justin Rich, owner of Orillia Tool & C.N.C. and former Twin Lakes Secondary School, in a release from OMA.
