Are you ready for some football?!

InterceptionEditedNothing says fall and school spirit quite like football. While the official boys’ football schedule already started with junior games in Midland and Angus, today the Thursday Night Lights (TNL) format begins for 2013.

This year the traditional TNL games are being played at the Barrie Sports Complex (BSC) field instead of at a specific school. We are hoping this creates a “big-time” atmosphere for the players and their fans.

Previously, when the games were played at the host school, the staging of these events was a huge undertaking. Using the BSC enables the schools involved to focus on the game rather than the logistics. The lights, bleachers and other infrastructure are already in place.

The BSC also has a larger capacity for spectators, so attendance won’t be limited to the two competing schools’ friends and family. Everyone is welcome to come out and watch!

Only Senior games will be played in the TNL format. Junior games will be played at the host school with 2:30 p.m. start. This way junior student can support their junior teams without having to travel out to the BSC in Midhurst.

Some schools may arrange a fan bus to take students from the school to the field to boost the cheering sections! Make sure to ask your school Athletic Director if your school has a bus going to the games.

Phoenix vs. Panthers kick off new TNL season

This season, TNL starts on a Wednesday so we can take advantage of the nice September weather. Tonight’s game pits AAA Senior GBSSA Finalist Barrie Central Phoenix hosting the St. Peter’s Panthers. The weather looks great and both teams will be raring to go in their first league game.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 19, perennial rivals Barrie North Vikings will take on the Eastview Wildcats in a battle for Grove Street supremacy.

Great local talent, great spectator venue

SCAA Football is competitive with the best programs in the province. And, with such great talent in our area, it’s important to provide the right stage for these student athletes. The field at BSC is excellent, so the level of play is bound to be spectacular. And there are bleachers enough to support 300 fans, or you can bring your own lawn chair and sit by the sidelines. So, come on out to cheer on our amazing athletes!

The games begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission for students and adults is $5 each and children under 12 are free.

Spectators are reminded there is no parking along Highway 26, but there is plenty of free parking at the BSC. There will be an OPP presence at the game to ensure the safety of all students and spectators.

The Thursday Night Lights Senior Schedule for 2013 is:

Wednesday, Sept. 18, St. Peter’s Panther vs Barrie Central Phoenix
Thursday, Sept. 19, Barrie North Vikings vs Eastview Wildcats*
Thursday, Sept. 26, Innisdale Invader vs Nantyr Shore Tritons*
